This can be done on or off lead.
- With your dog walking to heel walk at a normal pace, constantly changing direction and stopping then starting to walk again.
- At first your dog may keep trying to get ahead of you, but you are always staying one step ahead by changing where you are going.
- Your dog will begin to follow you, watching carefully to see where you go next.
- When this happens walk in a straight line, if your dog keeps to heel, praise and reward your dog.
- If he tries to walk ahead of you begin the routine again.
This is a great way of showing the dog you are in charge and are the decision maker. You may feel a bit daft doing this at first (I know I did) but it really works great. This is a great routine to use whenever you go to a new place or somewhere your dog may feel a bit nervous. By doing this you are saying to the dog ‘its ok I’m in charge, just follow me’.
